As the December 20 deadline to adopt the federal budget for Fiscal Year 2025 approaches, a short-term continuing resolution is likely as neither the House nor Senate have passed the necessary budget bills.
Without congressional action prior to the deadline, budgetary funding expires on December 20 and a shutdown would occur.
A federal government shutdown may stop, among other programs, discretionary formula grants to municipalities. During past federal shutdowns, a wide range of services were affected, including public assistance programs, closing of national parks, reduction of some food safety programs, reduction in access to some veterans’ programs, and the inability to process federal housing and small business loans. It may also affect FEMA natural disaster cleanup efforts.
We will monitor developments and report accordingly.
