Time to jump in! Before you get started though, it's important to learn some basics about current issues, an overview of responsibilities, and best practices for creating municipal budgets.
Training for Elected Officials
The League offers in-person and virtual training throughout the year on a broad range of municipal subjects.
Orientation for Municipal Officials in January & February: Each January and February the League holds an orientation for municipal officials who are newly elected, re-elected, or experienced. This program is designed to quickly bring officials up-to-date on important municipal issues. Attending newly elected officials will get a thorough overview of their major areas of responsibility, key contact at the State level, and important sources of information and assistance.
Budgeting in March: Each March the League also holds a program specific to budgeting for elected officials. Creating and approving a feasible budget is one of the most important tasks of an elected official; it is also one of the most complex and time consuming tasks. This special half day program is geared towards helping elected officials understand the municipal budgeting process.
Hosted by our legislative staff, Lunch and Learns are hour-long briefings given by state and federal experts on current issues impacting municipalities. The sessions are free, held during lunch hours, and include a Q&A. Subscribe to the Lunch & Learn news flash for email alerts when new programs are announced. Or to view previous Lunch and Learns visit our library.
In addition to our year-round seminars, many sessions at the Annual League Conference are geared toward the education of elected officials. The Annual Conference is held each year the week before Thanksgiving in the Atlantic City Convention Center.
