I. NLC Report on Cybersecurity

In recognition of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, the NJLM affiliate National League of Cities (NLC) just released their newest guide, "Protecting Our Data: What Cities Should Know About Cybersecurity." NLC wrote this report for local elected and appointed officials, especially for those who may not have a background in cybersecurity or network management. It was completed in collaboration with the Public Technology Institute. Please feel free to share with anyone who may be interested.

The guide outlines ten recommended first steps for city officials hoping to improve cybersecurity, includes a few really interesting case studies of local security breaches (including the time NLC itself was hit by ransomware), and a checklist local IT directors can use to get started.

II. Survey Perceptions of Public Employees

Rutgers-Center for Government Services will be presenting a panel at the League Conference “Perceptions of Public Employees: Fire Them? Reward Them?” and they want your input. This session will address how appointed and elected local government officials perceive the issue of citizen distrust, and their input on how employees might contribute to improving the perceptions.

Data will be presented on how NJ public officials recommend municipal governments respond to those negative perceptions. Please provide your input directly to the Rutgers-Center for Government Services through this short (8 minute) survey. They thank you for your input.

III. Free DEP Seminar on UST Compliance

Thursday November 14, 8:30 AM – 2:00 PM The Bureau of Underground Storage Tanks is hosting a compliance seminar at the State Police Auditorium located in Hamilton Twp., Mercer County.

The seminar is for all facilities that maintain a regulated underground storage tank (UST) system. If your town has gasoline or diesel fuel stored underground this seminar will provide you with rule requirements and guidance for maintaining compliance. They will also be discussing commonly found violations since the new air rule took effect in 2017 and the new UST rule took effect in 2018. DEP inspectors will be available after the seminar for site specific questions and compliance assistance. The seminar is free, however registration is required. Register

For questions about the seminar please call Jenna DiNuzzo at DEP (609) 672-1309.
