I. First Meeting of the New PFRS Board of Trustees

On Friday, February 1 the first meeting of the newly formed Police & Firemen Retirement System (PFRS) Board of Trustees was held. If you recall P.L. 2018, c. 55 established a new PFRS Board of Trustees that changed the governance of the PFRS from a balanced management labor board to a labor dominated board. The NJLM appointments to the board are Closter Mayor John Glidden, Jr. and Paulsboro Administrator Susan Jacobucci. They are joined by Union County Manager Ed Oatman, Somerset County Chief Financial Officer Nick Trasente and Division of Pensions and Benefits Acting Director John Megariotis as management representatives.

The meeting was organizational in nature. Ed Donnelly (NJFMBA President & appointee) was selected as Chair and James Kompany (Roselle Park Police Officer & PBA appointee) was selected as Vice Chair. The Board selected the meeting dates, discussed the training schedule, approved the continuation of the current vendor to assist with the disability process, accepted the Division of Pensions’ proposed order of business, and authorized the short-term agreement with Division of Pensions as required by law.

Several items were tabled to the next meeting, scheduled for February 11, including discussion of selection/designation of professionals and the selection of subcommittee members. In regards to the subcommittee composition Chairman Donnelly made it very clear during the meeting and in a follow up conversation that management representatives will be part of the subcommittees.

The election of the representative for retired members of PFRS is being contested and there may be litigation on this matter.
