A cyberattack could be waiting just around the corner. Do you know how to respond if it happens in your municipality? Learn best practices and arm yourself with tools to make quick quality decisions and protect your assets. 

10:45 a.m.-12:00 p.m.  Roundtable: Drone Technology (Room 307) 

East Orange Mayor Ted Green will lead a discussion on the latest trends in drone technology and how it’s used in the city. 

10:45 a.m.-12:00 p.m.  How Your Town Can Access Federal Broadband Improvement Funds (Room 416) 

Federal Broadband improvement money is now being distributed to municipalities. To apply, towns must supply maps of underserved or unserved areas. Once these are established, your town may apply for the funds needed to bring broadband to all. This panel will address the mapping process to identify needy areas and how to apply for the funds. 

10:45 a.m.-12:00 p.m.  Emerging Issues in Municipal Use of Social Media (Room 417) 

 The continually developing topics of local government employees, governing bodies, departments, boards, and commissions will get input to better understand the emerging issues in municipal use of social media. Co-sponsored with NJLM. 

2:00 p.m.-3:15 p.m.  Governing in a Social Media Fishbowl (Room 305/306) 

Social media can provide an excellent way to reach your residents, but how can you do this effectively in an age when everything is recorded, even your personal activities outside of working hours? Municipalities need to decide how they are going to engage with the public online if they are going to address criticism, and how. Also discussing social media archiving. 

2:00 p.m.-3:15 p.m.  Real-Time Video Updates During Critical Situations (Room 416) 

Learn how faster, more informed, tactical decisions can be made when municipalities share real-time video, cellular information, and drone footage with OEMs, police, fire, other first responders, and local PEG channels. We’ll also assess the impact of federal legislation on drone purchases for government agencies.

In 2023, America experienced an unprecedented increase in cyberattacks and malicious cyber activity. We will discuss the top cyber threats, how local governments in the US are being impacted, what steps can be taken to gain better cybersecurity, and what best practices to follow. 

9:00 a.m.-10:15 a.m.  Ready for the DOJ Website Accessibility Ruling? (Room 308) 

The Department of Justice (DOJ) has placed a timeline for municipalities to implement WCAG 2.1 AA compliance. Confused about what this means and how it affects your website? This panel will discuss what you can start doing now to get ready and provide an overview of what the guidelines are, the penalties for noncompliance, and the challenges and rewards. 

10:45 a.m.-12:00 p.m.  Understanding Cable Franchising & What to Know When Renegotiating (Room 315) 

What are the differences between a State Franchise, and a negotiated one? Which one is a better choice, and can a municipality negotiate for the one they prefer? Nationally, municipalities are trying to get streamers to pay their fair share. What does that mean for the local access station?
