Halfway through Conference Week and the sessions continue to offer answer questions and promote solutions for the issues facing local government officials during the pandemic and beyond. Start the day with a greeting from League President Jim Perry.
Trenton’s Legislative Leadership gather during the Legislative Leaders: What the Heck Happened? What Happens Next? session. Michael Aron, the Dean of the State House Press Corps, returns to lead our panel of Legislative Leaders and League First Vice President, Mayor Janice Kovach of Clinton Town, in a look at the lessons we may have learned during the pandemic, and ahead to what that will mean for the Garden State in 2021. Senate President Steven Sweeney, Assembly Speaker Craig J. Coughlin, Senate Republican Leader Thomas H. Kean Jr., and NJ General Assembly Republican Leader Jon M. Bramnick discuss today’s major issues.
The Potential State and Local Solutions to the Opioid Crisis session at 3:15 p.m. brings NJLM President Jim Perry to the table with Gov. Phil Murphy, Attorney General Gurbir Grewal, and Debi Natale from the Parent to Parent Association Services Inc. to examine the societal, health, and addiction policy issues surrounding the opioid epidemic, and discuss the challenges and potential for local and State-based solutions to solve the opioid crisis in New Jersey.
COVID-19 challenges and strategies are the focus of several sessions today including Mental Health First Aid and Moving Back to the Future: Changes in Municipal Operations, both at 9 a.m. Financial aspects of this unique time are covered at 11 a.m. in the sessions Federal Legislative Update: CARES, 5G, and More and State and Local Governments Financial State of Affairs. At 1:30 p.m., Emerging Issues in Procurement looks at health crisis emergency procurement processes and other emerging issues. Managing Litter During a Pandemic will be addressed at a 3:15 p.m. session.
