On Thursday, December 7, the Senate Judiciary Committee advanced A-4471, which would increase penalties for assault and harassment against sports officials and participants at school or community sponsored youth sports events.
While the League appreciates the bill's intent to protect sports officials and participants, we have concerns about its current form. Specifically, A-4471 sets minimum fines and penalties for certain crimes when committed against youth sports officials and participants, eliminating judicial discretion in these matters. Due to this significant concern, the League cannot support the bill in its current form. We remain committed to this issue and will keep our members informed on any developments as the bill progresses through the legislative process.
