DEP Calls for Projects to Replace Diesel Vehicles

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has announced a follow up $13 million funding opportunity for local governments to replace their medium and heavy-duty diesel vehicles with electric vehicles using funds from the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI). Vehicles the that are eligible under the program include the following:

  • Shuttles
  • Transit Buses
  • Garbage Trucks
  • Dump Trucks
  • Type A and Type B Buses

Priority will be accorded to projects with the best greenhouse gas cost effectiveness with a focus on overburdened communities

The vehicles slated for replacement must be decommissioned. Funded vehicles will be required to install a state-provided telematic device for a period of three years.

It's important to note that this program operates on a reimbursement basis, releasing funds only upon verification of the grantee's payment for the vehicles/equipment and electric charging station(s).

Awards will be flat incentive amounts determined by vehicle type and class. Additional incentive amounts are accessible for both overburdened communities and small governments. These amounts are designed to reflect the approximate incremental cost between a new electric vehicle and a new diesel vehicle, inclusive of the charging station.

All proposals are due by 11:59pm on September 4, 2023. For more information, please visit DEP’s website.
