The New Jersey Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness (NJOHSP) is offering in-person paid internships to talented students interested in a career in homeland security, emergency preparedness or cybersecurity at their Hamilton, West Trenton or Newark offices. The summer program is paid ($20/hour) and will run from June 8 to July 31 for all divisions except New Jersey Cybersecurity & Communications Integration Cell (NJCCIC). The NJCCIC internship program will run from June 8 to August 28. 

Interns will:

• Be exposed to all facets of the State homeland security and preparedness mission.
• Interact with senior government officials and various government agencies.
• Receive training and career development opportunities.
• Have the opportunity to gain valuable work experience and college credit.
• Conclude their internship with a capstone presentation. 

Internships are offered in the following areas:

• Intelligence & Operations Division (Hamilton) (8 Week Program)
• Preparedness Division (Hamilton) (8 Week Program)
• Administration Division (Hamilton) (8 Week Program)
• NJ Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Cell (NJCCIC)  (Hamilton, West Trenton or Newark) ( 12 Week Program)

Applicants will be able to select one Division of their interest. Interns must report to in-person to their assigned office location. Interns are hired as temporary employment services (TES) employees and are not eligible for remote work. Hours of work will be Monday-Friday within business hours of 8:00 am  - 5:00 pm. Interns are limited to no more than 35 hours per week. The internship program starts and ends on the dates noted above.

The internship for the Administration, Preparedness, and Intelligence & Operations Divisions is a consecutive eight (8) week program for five days a week (Monday-Friday). The internship in the NJCCIC Division is a consecutive twelve (12) week program for five days a week (Monday-Friday).

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

High School Seniors are welcome to apply to internships in our NJ Cybersecurity & Communications Integration Cell (NJCCIC). Internships in all other areas are only open to undergraduate and graduate students who are enrolled full-time in an accredited college or university or post-graduate program who have completed a minimum of 48 college credits or two years by the start of the internship. 

Applicable to all students:

• Undergo a Level 1 background investigation check.
• Have a U.S. citizenship or permanent residence status.
• Be available for the entire duration of the internship program.
• Submit all required documentation with application (resume, unofficial transcript, completed State of New Jersey Application for Employment (available on our website), cover letter discussing why you wish to intern for NJOHSP, and a writing sample under 500 words demonstrating your written work product (school assignment is acceptable).
• Must be available for Orientation on June 8, 2026.

• Completed State of New Jersey Application for Employment (available on our website)
• Letter of recommendation is optional.

All submissions must be received no later than 4:00PM on the closing date. Failure to submit all required documentation may result in your disqualification. 

Government Finance Officers Association of New Jersey (GFOA) has announced that they will again be making available up to (4) scholarships of up to $1,500.00 through the Association’s Collegiate and CMFO Track Scholarship programs in honor of the late Bill Homa. Applications are due March 20, 2026, and must be emailed to info@gfoanj.org. 

The GFOA Collegiate Scholarship is for either the cost of registration for two attendees at the GFOANJ’s Fall Conference in 2026 or one room for a two-night stay at the GFOA’s Fall Conference in 2026. To apply applicants must be residents of New Jersey and must be full or part time students with a declared major in a field of study related to accounting, finance, or an equivalent subject. Applicants must include unofficial transcripts, a minimum of (2) sealed letters of recommendation, and a (1) page statement regarding their public sector career plans and why they deserve this scholarship.  

The GFOA CMFO Track Scholarship will award one scholarship to cover the cost of the tuition for (1) of following eligible programs: Municipal Finance Administration; Municipal Budget Process; Municipal Current Fund Accounting 1; Municipal Current Fund Accounting 2; Municipal Capital and Trust Fund Accounting; Municipal Utility Fund Accounting; Principles of Financial Management; Preparation of Annual Financial Statements; and, CMFO Exam Review Statutes/Accounting. This scholarship will also include the cost of registration for (2) attendees at GFOANJ’s Fall Conference in 2025 and (1) room for a (2) night stay at GFOANJ’s Fall Conference in 2026. 

To apply for the GFOA CMFO Track Scholarship applicants must be residents of New Jersey. Applicants must have graduated from a (4) year course of study at a recognized college or university with a major course study in business administration, accounting, or an equivalent subject. Applicants must possess (6) credits in Introduction to financial accounting or managerial accounting (accounting 101 and 102) at the college level; or must have (4) years of full-time experience as a municipal director of finance, assistant director of finance, fiscal officer, municipal comptroller, assistant comptroller, municipal treasurer, assistant municipal treasurer or deputy treasurer in any local unit. Applicants who do not possess (4) years of full-time experience in such a position may substitute (1) year of college education for (1) year of experience, up to a maximum of (2) years of college education. (1) full year of college education is equal to 30 college credits. Applicants must produce a certification of “Years of Service” needs if qualifying under full-time experience and must not be eligible for reimbursement by their employer for CMFO Curriculum. Applicants must also submit a minimum of (2) sealed letters of recommendations and a (1) page statement regarding their public sector career plans and why they deserve this scholarship. This scholarship is a (1) time, non-recurring award payable directly to the Rutgers Center for Local Government Studies. Should the scholarship recipient be enrolled in more than one course concurrently, the GFOANJ will pay for the most expensive course.
