Article Submission Guidelines

NJ Municipalities, the magazine of the New Jersey League of Municipalities, is published every month, except for July, August, and September. The circulation consists of New Jersey municipal officials and staff, state-level officials, and professionals interested in local government issues. Please write your articles with this audience in mind.

We are interested in original articles focusing on New Jersey, on programs, or on ideas that would be of interest to New Jersey’s municipal leaders. Commercial firms are also invited to submit feature articles.
These articles should:

  • Discuss a project or product as it is used in a New Jersey municipality or, if necessary, in a municipality outside the state.
  • Avoid promoting specific brands, firms, or individuals.
  • Feature compelling information that will be helpful to our readers.

Length

Feature articles can be from 800 to 1,200 words; Op-Ed columns between 600 and 800 words; and news items for NJ Now between 100 and 400 words.

Deadlines

The deadline is usually the 15th of the month two months before publication (e.g., October 20 for the December issue). The exception is the October issue's due date of August 10.

Sending It In

Please Email Amy Spiezio an attached Microsoft Word file with a name/title for the byline, preferably the mayor for municipal pieces.

Photos and Charts

Please email photos, charts, or graphs as separate .jpg, .bmp or .tiff files of over 1MB and include caption information (who, what, when, where) and photo credit information if required.
If the picture is of one or two recognizable individuals, please ask the subjects to sign a release. If the picture is of a minor, a parent or guardian must sign our release form. A release is not necessary if the picture is of a large group of people. If you cannot supply a photo, we find a stock image to appropriately illustrate the feature.

NJ Municipalities is available by subscription in print and digital format.
